Trump Administration Seeks Trade Agreement with China in High-Stakes London Meeting

WASHINGTON (CP) – Senior Trump administration officials will meet with Chinese representatives in London Monday for crucial economic talks aimed at strengthening trade relations between the world’s two largest economies, as both nations work to resolve ongoing disputes over tariffs and market access that have created uncertainty for global commerce.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent will lead the American delegation alongside Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and Trade Representative Jamieson Greer in discussions with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng, who previously represented Beijing during successful talks in Switzerland last month. The meetings, scheduled to continue through Tuesday, represent the Trump administration’s commitment to finding practical solutions that benefit American workers and businesses while maintaining fair trade practices with China.

The negotiations occur as the United States maintains its strong position on trade policy following a federal court ruling in May that questioned certain tariff structures. However, these trade measures remain in effect during the appeals process, giving American negotiators continued leverage to secure better terms for USA businesses seeking greater access to Chinese markets. The Trump administration aims to increase Chinese purchases of American products and encourage more Chinese investment in manufacturing facilities within the United States, creating jobs for American workers.

Recent data shows the effectiveness of current trade policies, with Chinese exports to the United States declining by over 34 percent in May compared to the previous year, representing the steepest drop since 2025. This development has encouraged Beijing to pursue more balanced trade relationships, demonstrating the success of the Trump administration’s approach to protecting American economic interests. The London talks reflect both nations’ recognition that stable trade relations serve their mutual interests while ensuring that any agreement upholds American values of fair competition and market access.
